I have no idea on how to make money on DeviantArt period. You can use the Commissions widget on your profile page. Making Money from Deviantart Adoptables

This is part of a series of posts I’m writing on methods to make extra money, usually online. Anything mentioned has been researched or personally tested by me, but let me know if I do end up giving any faulty advice. None of these links are affliate or sponsored links. (AKA tumblr please don’t remove my stuff I’m just a disabled dude helping other disabled people/people who’re struggling)

What is an adoptable?

This refers to characters/designs that are sold or given away! These can be fancharacters, real animals, custom made species, humans, anthros… The list goes on! They come in “full” made form, or as breedables, customs, or hatchables. More on those later on!

Adopted characters may be used as mascots, occasional muses to draw, OCs, or for whatever else.

Why dA?

There’s a couple reasons I suggest dA as your main place to sell adoptables:

For one, dA is well known for adoptables and plenty of people look there! This means that your adopts are more likely to be seen on dA than anywhere else. I would suggest still crossposting them to tumblr and other sites, though.

Additionally, the format makes it easy to advertise them through groups. dA has a “group” system, and the process of adding something you post to each one can be a bit painstaking, but adoptable-based groups are usually the best place to show off your products! Check out my dA profile, look at all the groups I’m in. (Note: Most groups have categorized folders based on the type of adoptable - make sure you put things where they’re supposed to go!)

Base Usage?

The main reason I write this tutorial is because you can use resources others have posted to make money very easily. If you do things right, it takes minimum effort to make a few extra bucks from adoptables. Or, you can give them away for free or dA’s points.

There are plenty of users who make bases/lineart on dA, and some of them even allow what you make with these bases to be sold for points/money! I happen to have quite a few of these in my favs. Feel free to scroll through there to find lineart that you like to try out this kind of stuff.

There’s also plenty of free quality art programs one can use to color these in. It’s very easy, and lots of fun to spend time coloring things in and making cute characters.

Heck, some folks will even do adoptsfromdollmakers dA asks that you not sell adoptables from dollmakers for points or money typically, but plenty of people offer dollmaker adopts anyway or list it as as “OTA” - offer to adopt, usually trading artwork or characters. This is a great way to get free art, but not any actual money. There’s also the Kisekae site by Pochi, which is free for commercial usage, and therefore can be sold. (Not very many people know this about Kisekae, though, so make sure to clarify that)

Points?

You can either make money directly by selling things, and only accepting PayPal, or you can also sell things for points and slowly make money, but have a better chance of selling. That’s another nice thing about dA, it has it’s own built-in currency system, called points. You can get a few of these by llama trading, the built-in commission widget, winning contests/raffles made by the community, or through adding a donation bar to your profile. Points obtained through that, though, can’t be redeemed for money. dA is a little specific about this, so here’s how you can gain points which can be redeemed.

The most common way of paying for an adopt is just listing the price, and the purchaser will send you the points manually. To do it in a redeemable way, so you can actually make some money from it, the points you get have to come from a purchase on a deviation.

On any deviation, you have the ability to add “additional content,” and how I do this is that I’ve made a simple png image that says “thank you for purchasing, it helps a lot”, and on adoptables where there’s only one on the sheet, I’ll also enable the watermark on the image, leaving only the purchaser able to get the unwatermarked version after they click purchase. (For multiple adoptables in one deviation, I don’t bother with the watermark, although you could, and send the buyer the unwatermarked image, but I find that annoying to do.)

Here’s how I usually explain using the purchase button in my adoptables. Explaining this is a good idea, in case someone’s unfamiliar with paying this way.

So, that’s definitely not much, but the great thing about this is that there’s so little effort I have to make to get these things out there.

Once you have however much, you can have your profits redeemed straight to PayPal or a check.

Alternate Redemptions

There’s also another way to redeem points, by… Straight up trading. This has become much more popular recently. I don’t know how well this works/the rate of getting scammed, but what one does is just offer to give someone all of your points in trade for money to your PayPal, or vise versa.

This can be useful, because then you don’t HAVE to go through all the trouble of purchase buttons, points gained from llamas can literally make you money, and your prices don’t have to stay in 10 point increases. However, dA discourages this. You could do things through this method if you really wanted to, I guess, but you can get in trouble for it.

So, that’s how I do my adoptables! This is usually a very slow process, but it’s yet another thing that can be low effort and make you a few extra dollars. If you need any further help or advice, feel free to ask.
